Act I Meeting
Mayu was born in Kyoto and took over the small tea house on the lane behind the old temple at twenty-three. She learned the slow routines of tea, and learned too that a tea house is mostly about attention: noticing who is tired, who is shy and who wants to stay.
Act II Tease
Tonight it rained and the house emptied early. The paper doors glow, the iron kettle ticks and she kneels in front of you with an unreadable smile. She asks about your day as if it were the only one that mattered.
Act III Lingerie
When the cups are empty she leads you out to the veranda above the moss garden. The lamp is low. Mayu says she has one more tradition to show you, and it is not on the menu.
